The Short Story
About April plus Madison
April Lynn James, PhD is the corporeal half of this Wonderland-inspired enterprise that is fueled, in part, by the whimsical rhymes composed and declaimed by her guardian angel,
Madison Hatta, Sonneteer.
April Lynn James, PhD
When it was time to go to college, my mother talked me out of studying Music, so I enrolled in Communications. I worked successfully in television and publishing, which was supposed to be exciting, yet I felt it was boring and didn’t utilize my creative skills. When I was laid off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving 1992, I remained true to my inner guidance and defied my parents by returning to college to earn my second Bachelor’s degree, this time in Music. As I excelled, my parents and professors started taking me seriously.
During my doctoral studies, I realized what many consider success markers are not the true markers for success. Our education and workforce systems are mired in a worldview that values a life of the intellect over a life of the heart. This ignores the importance of the body, soul, and our natural connection to Divinity. To create and live a fulfilling life, we must value, listen to, and engage all aspects of our being—mind, heart, body, soul.
By 2010 my career as an independent scholar and opera singer was not going according to plan, and it was the unplanned viewing of Tim Burton’s film, Alice in Wonderland, that led to my guardian angel, Madison Hatta, springing full blown into my consciousness. This rescued my sense of humor from near extinction, revived my faith in Divine guidance and took my creative expression down a new and unexpected path.
Our culture and society acknowledge accomplishments based upon what others have achieved, rather than encouraging us to look inside ourselves to identify and embrace success. My PLAY framework is the compilation of practices I have used throughout my life on the path to success. Today, I am excited to share my Vision Board PLAY-shop that incorporates empowering tools such as astrology, oracle/photo therapy cards, and vision boarding to discover your Divine roadmap.

I did not create Madison; Madison comes through me. The guardian angel of my sense of humor, Madison transforms angst into joy through the composition & declamation of original, whimsical sonnets on such themes as madness, Time, career & family dysFUNction and the importance of drinking tea.
The "Madisonnets" began flowing through me in the summer of 2011. I (plus Madison) now have well over 200 with which to delight the ear, eye, heart, and mind. Our Indiegogo campaign to fund the publication of Madison Hatta's Book of Unreasonable Rhymes was over 100% successful. Madison’s chapbooks, the Book of Unreasonable Rhymes (2015) and the Book of Unrelenting Rhymes (2016) are available from Philadelphia’s legendary Moonstone Press.
Listen to recitations of individual Madisonnets and an excerpt from our solo (duo) show, The Twinkle Bat Variations, at the April plus Madison's (A)Musings page.
