While teaching a Music History course at a university in Philadelphia, I was shocked to discover that practically none of my students had heard of Marian Anderson. I promised myself that if I ever got the chance, that I would do something to remedy that situation. Since joining Penn Libraries, it has been an honor and a pleasure to extend my research on women composers into the 20th century through my 2018 exhibit, Women Composing for Marian Anderson, the first exhibit on this topic in an American library. I recently presented it as a poster session for Music Library Association Annual in Norfolk, VA, and will present it in 2021 for the National Conference of African American Librarians.
I am also part of the team behind Discovering Marian Anderson, Penn Libraries' new web portal through which one can access a significant portion of the Marian Anderson Papers. I wrote the short biography that appears under "About Marian Anderson".
